Finding the Right Used Bus — A Senegal Customer’s Preowned Coaster, from Our Yard to Their Road

My name is Chris Mo. I sell used buses for a living, and after ten years in this job you learn to read more than just maintenance records — you learn to read people. The interaction we had with a new customer from Senegal reminded me why a straightforward, honest approach works best.

He found us through Google Ads on May 20, 2025, and by July 16, 2025 we had a confirmed order for a white, six-cylinder diesel used Toyota Coaster that had once been a government vehicle. It’s a simple story, but the details matter — so I’ll tell them as they happened.

The first message — clear and practical

The inquiry came in on May 20. The buyer wanted a Coaster, white, six-cylinder diesel, reliable for passenger work in Senegal. No fluff. People who start with clear specs like that are easier to help because they know what they’ll run and what they need.

Because the lead arrived via Google Ads, I expected he’d seen a few other preowned bus suppliers in China. I prepared a quick but thorough reply: photos, a short walk-around video, and a summary of inspection items or maintenance checklist we’d do before shipment.

When you’re selling to first-time importers, transparency is more important than a low price. I wanted him to see that the vehicle we offered would do the job for many years.

The bus background — government use, healthier history

This particular Coaster was procured by Tianying in early June from the Yuanyang County Government in Xinxiang City. That matters. Government vehicles in China are often maintained on a fixed schedule, driven carefully, and retired when they still have useful life left. In plain terms: the logs were in order, the engine had regular oil and filter changes, and the interior showed careful use.

When I inspected it, I checked the usual things: compression readings on each cylinder, turbo and intercooler condition, gearbox smoothness, brake pad thickness, and the chassis for any signs of repair or corrosion. I also checked the underside for oil leaks and the suspension for play. Mechanically it was solid. Cosmetically it was tidy. That combination is rare and worth paying attention to.

The yard visit — he chose at first sight

He came to the Tianying yard a couple of weeks after the initial message. Our yard holds a lot of stock — some buyers like to see many options. On that visit we had seven or eight Coasters lined up.

I pointed out differences in model years, engine tune, and expected remaining mileage. I try to keep conversations practical: “This one has two previous owners and full service records; this one is cheaper but will need a new clutch sooner.”

He walked the line and stopped at the white, six-cylinder Coaster from Yuanyang. He climbed in, looked under the seats, checked the engine bay while I ran the engine, and then — quietly — said, “This is the one.” No haggling for the sake of it, no long debate. Sometimes, when the vehicle fits the buyer’s needs, there’s little left to discuss.

Why this Coaster fits Senegal

A few reasons made this Coaster ideal for Senegal:

  • Engine choice. Six-cylinder diesels give smoother torque delivery and usually last longer under heavy use than small four-cylinders. For shuttle routes or rough road conditions, that extra durability matters.
  • Government maintenance history. The service stamps and invoices were there. That doesn’t guarantee perfection, but it does lower the risk compared with a privately run vehicle with unknown care.
  • Immediate availability. The bus was in our yard and ready for final checks and export documentation. That shortens lead time — important when the operator wants to start work quickly.
  • Condition matched expectations. He wanted a clean, dependable unit and that’s what he saw. Appearance matters for passenger comfort, but for operators the engine and chassis matter most. This Coaster checked both boxes.

The practical work — inspection, paperwork, shipment prep

After he chose the bus, we performed a final pre-sale checklist. I supervised a compression test, an oil analysis sample, brake inspection, and an A/C performance check. We also performed a road test on local roads so he could hear it run at steady speeds.

On the paperwork side, I walked him through export procedures, explained the bill of sale, and listed the documents he would receive for customs clearance in Senegal. I try to explain things plainly — who signs what, when the title transfers, and what the shipping milestones look like. Customers appreciate when a seller can demystify the paperwork.

Order confirmation — July 16, 2025

On July 16 he confirmed the order and sent the deposit. When that happens, I feel a little relief (shipping logistics are always busy) and a little pride — we matched the buyer to the right product. After the deposit, my team completed final detailing, sealed any small service items, and prepared the full inspection packet for export.

A few honest lessons I shared with him

Throughout the process I passed on a few practical tips that I give to many international buyers:

  • Prioritize engine and chassis over superficial cosmetics.A repaint is easy; a cracked block is not.
  • Check service history carefully. It gives a better reading of how the bus was used.
  • Plan for local maintenance.Make sure parts for common wear items are available locally or that you can source them reliably.

He listened. He knew his operating environment and chose accordingly.

Why this sale matters to me

I don’t tell this story because it’s an extraordinary deal. I tell it because it’s a reminder of how the basics win: honesty, solid inspection, clear paperwork, and letting the vehicle speak for itself. Many buyers call us after seeing dozens of listings online; they can be overwhelmed by options and uncertain about condition. Getting a customer to the yard, or at least giving them a full walk-around video and honest answers, usually ends confusion.

The Coaster left our yard with our best wishes and a full inspection pack. I’m confident it will do good service in Senegal.
